Pino Musi (Salerno, 1958), a world-famous visual artist and photographer, began to photograph at 14 years old, training as a self-taught in the black and white technique. His career was meaningfully influenced by his attendance of the avant-garde and experimental theatre, at least until the late 1980s. Over the years, his research has come across and related different cultural fields, personally interlacing anthropology and architecture, archaeology and industry. His photography is based on formal rigour, rhythm and subtraction. The aim is not to represent visible reality, but to produce, through a subtle abstraction, free from any form of aestheticism or nostalgia, unexpected insights and visual counterpoints that tune in a complex harmony,

The exposition Polyphōnia is presented in the spaces of the Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud with a corpus of 50 works produced by the Foundation and a 25 minutes film, specifically produced for the occasion, that, consistently and without complacency, provide a clear and powerful reflection on the “edges” of metropolis and on our perception of contemporary urban space. Since 2018 the artist addressed his research to the new suburbs of the major European cities – among others Paris, Anvers and Berlin – places marked by anonymous expansions and architectural contradictions. His images, free from explicit geographical or temporal references, do not seek recognition of the referent, but offer a visual experience that has much to do with the musical notation. Musi, who works exclusively with black and white, uses the digital technique with measured interventions, so unveiling the hidden and ambiguous essence of the photographed subjects. No narrative or documentary indulgence is employed: his gaze investigates solids and voids, structures and tensions, composing veritable visual scores.

On the occasion of the exhibition, Pino Musi has created a veritable Artist book, published by Dario Cimorelli publisher.
