From 20 September 2025 to 6 January 2026 Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud in Lecce will present the exhibition Pino Musi. Polyphōnia curated by Stefania Zuliani.
This will be the eleventh exhibition event of the Foundation – founded in 2018 by the couple Luigi Biscozzi and Dominique Rimbaud with the intent of promoting modern and contemporary art – the exhibition brings to Lecce the work of Pino Musi (Salerno, 1958), an internationally renowned visual artist and photographer who has been living in Paris for many years.
These are the words of the president Dominique Rimbaud: “It is an honour and a great joy for the Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud to hold Pino Musi’s show Polyphōnia here. Musi plays with the images – we can no longer speak of mere photographs – which his imagination and eye, balancing between an extreme tenderness for the marginal places of the world and the rational gaze of the artist, have been able to capture and transform, transmuting them into abstract works of art. I am especially happy to host these works in our Foundation’s Museum, which houses works by the great names of Italian and international abstract art.”
Pino Musi began to photograph at 14 years old, training as a self-taught in the black and white technique. His career was meaningfully influenced by his attendance of the avant-garde and experimental theatre, at least until the late 1980s. Over the years, his research has come across and related different cultural fields, personally interlacing anthropology and architecture, archaeology and industry.
His photography is based on formal rigour, rhythm and subtraction. The aim is not to represent visible reality, but to produce, through a subtle abstraction, free from any form of aestheticism or nostalgia, unexpected insights and visual counterpoints that tune in a complex harmony. Musi, who works exclusively with black and white, uses the digital technique with measured interventions, so unveiling the hidden and ambiguous essence of the photographed subjects.
Since 2018 the artist addressed his research to the new suburbs of the major European cities – among others Paris, Anvers and Berlin – places marked by anonymous expansions and architectural contradictions. His images, free from explicit geographical or temporal references, do not seek recognition of the referent, but offer a visual experience that has much to do with the musical notation. No narrative or documentary indulgence is employed: his gaze investigates solids and voids, structures and tensions, composing veritable visual scores.
The exposition Polyphōnia is presented in the spaces of the Fondazione Biscozzi | Rimbaud with a corpus of 50 works and a 25 minutes film, specifically produced for the occasion, that, consistently and without complacency, provide a clear and powerful reflection on the “edges” of metropolis and on our perception of contemporary urban space.
As curator Stefania Zuliani states: “Musi builds his visions of architecture, landscapes, pages from the past, and faces always with the same urge: to show not what the eyes see but what the gaze distinguishes, that form, stable but not immobile, which becomes an image, something written with light that inevitably regards us, looks back at us and draws us in.”
Considering that his current research into form finds its best means of expression through art of bookmaking, in particular in the creation of artist books, the exhibition is accompanied by the Artist book, edited by Cimorelli Editore with an introduction by Dominique Rimbaud, president of the Foundation, and an essay by Stefania Zuliani, curator of the exhibition.
